Partnership Receives 2008 Hiscock Award for Advancing Public Health

The Connecticut Public Health Association Board of Directors voted to present the 2008 Ira V. Hiscock Award to the Connecticut Cancer Partnership. The Hiscock Award is presented annually to a Connecticut layperson or organization that has made notable contributions to the advancement of public health through public service, education, advocacy and/or leadership. Ira Hiscock was an internationally recognized epidemiologist and a public health professor at Yale University who inspired generations of students. Perez-Escamilla Appointed to 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee

A press release issued by the US Secretaries of Agriculture and Health and Human Services announced that Dr. Rafael Perez-Escamilla, a member of the Connecticut Cancer Partnership Board of Directors, has been appointed to the Advisory Committee for 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. He is one of 13 experts selected nationwide by the US Government to develop the new dietary guidelines for implementation in the US and in many parts of the world. Partnership Hosts 5th Annual Members Meeting

A coalition representing 149 Connecticut organizations dedicated to reducing the burden of cancer in Connecticut came together on September 19 for the Connecticut Cancer Partnership’s Fifth Annual Meeting at the Crowne Plaza in Cromwell. The meeting was led by Partnership Chair Dr. Andrew Salner of Hartford Hospital and the Connecticut State Medical Society and included keynote guest speaker Otis Brawley, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of the American Cancer Society. Partnership Co-hosts Cancer Poster Contest for Local Students

In an effort to bring cancer awareness to the community level, the Connecticut Cancer Partnership and Hartford Hospital hosted a cancer poster competition for students from the Greater Hartford Academy of Mathematics and Science (GHAMAS). The winners, selected during ceremonies on June 5 at Hartford Hospital, were: 1st place – Sanjana Patel (Colorectal Cancer); 2nd place – Harsida Desai (Skin Cancer); 3rd place – Chelsea Yalen (Pancreatic Cancer).
